This year will mark the 20th anniversary of Camp Victory’s annual motorcycle tour, Dr. O’s “Victory Ride 2014”.
The tour will be held on August 24. It will start at Camp Victory at 10:00 am and end there at noon. Pre-registration for the tour is $15.00 and regular registration is $20.00. Pre-registration ends August 19.
This will be the 20th year for the event, which was established by the late Dr. Oscar Oberchirker, a Geisinger nephrologist and one of Camp Victory’s early volunteers. Tim Hammaker, the long-time chair of Dr. O’s Victory Ride and one of its original organizers, has kept the tour going for many years with help from many other volunteers.
“When Oscar became ill I told him I’d do all that I could to keep the ride going,” he explains. Hammaker holds Camp Victory near to his heart because he has many personal connections with Camp Victory. He said that some of the tour’s riders have been participating since the tour’s first year, and they have created valuable friendships over the years.
“We decided to rename the ride to ‘Dr. O’s Victory Ride’ to both honor and remember Oscar for the wonderful human being that he was,” Hammaker remarks.
The event has raised more than $200,000 in its 20 years. All proceeds from the event benefit the operation of Camp Victory.
After the tour all participants are invited to a free Chicken Barbeque Dinner (covered by the registration fee). A bike show, poker run, lunch for non-riders and camp tours will be available as well. The bike show will be $10.00, poker run will be $5.00, lunch for non-riders will be $7.00 and the camp tours will be free.
There will also be a Hearty Breakfast from 8:00 am to 10:00 am at Camp Victory. The fee for the breakfast is $7.00, but if a participant secures $50.00 in pledges, they will receive a free breakfast. A worship service will also be held in the Dining Hall, beginning at 9:00 am.
Camp Victory is a special camp for special kids. Camp Victory partners with other organizations to host week-long and weekend camps. These camps are aimed toward aiding children with chronic illnesses and physical and emotional needs.
